Tough one. There were plenty of shows that I liked as a child that I didn't realise were anime until I was older...
The first anime I saw that I knew was anime was 'Battle Angel Alita', but I think 'The Last Unicorn' was one of my favourite movies long before I first saw Astro Boy, or other less obvious series like Lady Lovelylocks and Rainbow Brite.
If you're wondering why I consider Lady Lovelylocks and Rainbow Brite anime, have a look at the names in the 'Series Animation Department' on imdb, or at the credits at the end of the show if you still own some of the series. You'd be surprised just how many of the cartoons we watched growing up in the 80's were animated by the Japanese, even if the shows were predominantly released by Americans.
Battle Angel Alita (aka GUNM)
The Last Unicorn
As for 'The Last Unicorn', completely disregarding the names of the animation team, nothing screams 'anime' like a guy tied to a talking tree with giant boobs.
